The thick TV has a 'light box' with backlight LEDs in it which is what gives it the depth and I learned also the brightness (learned by testing without the 'light box'). Here's the part that I learned but don't fully understand. The smaller TV that has great brightness in daylight is much thicker even with the guts removed - closer to 1.25" thick/deep. So why not just swap them out? The first TV which is bigger was truly 'flat' in terms of depth when I removed the guts - only about 1/2" thick which works great for my frame depth. That HDMI TV displays beautifully through the mirror in the daylight. I tried a different smaller TV that I use for some of my Pi programming work. I have set the TV brightness settings to their max. I blocked out any light that might get behind the mirror to bleed through. I took apart the TV to get the guts out and put in in my mirror frame (actually a real picture frame around the glass. The problem is the display brightness isn't even visible during the day.
